  • Our Governors

    Our Governors come from a range of backgrounds, and bring different areas of expertise to the school.  Governors contribute to ensuring high standards of achievement for all children in the school by:

    • setting the school’s vision, ethos and strategic direction;
    • holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;
    • overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

    A Governor’s role is to support and challenge the senior staff to continue to improve the school.  It is largely a thinking and questioning role and Governors are not there to manage the school or do the jobs of school staff.  Governors fulfil their role by regularly attending Governing Body meetings, providing strategic guidance and by asking probing and challenging questions of leaders within the school.  They also undertake visits, serve on relevant committees and oversee the Headteacher’s performance management.

    Please find below details of our Governing board including the names, categories, terms of appointment and business and pecuniary interests for each Governor.

    Liz Dixon

    Foundation PCC Governor

    Governor Type: Foundation PCC

    Date of Appointment: November 2021

    Responsibilities: Distinctiveness as a Church School

    My name is Liz. I am a Licensed Lay Minister for St Mary’s Church in West Bergholt which includes planning and leading some of the Sunday services, and helping with some of our children and families work such as Food in School Holidays (FiSH) and the Tea and Toast after-school drop in club. My role as a Foundation Governor means I have been appointed by the church to support Heathlands in ensuring that its Christian ethos is encouraged throughout the school’s curriculum and activities.

    I grew up in Southampton but consider Colchester to be my hometown now! I became involved with St Mary’s in 1999, soon after moving to West Bergholt. I had been interested in exploring the Christian faith since I was a teenager, but it was by getting to know the folk at St Mary’s that helped me connect with God on a much more meaningful level. I first became involved in Heathlands school when my son attended from 2004-2010 and then kept in contact with the school through its links with the church such as helping with the Year 6 Retreats, prayer spaces and school services in church. I have been a Governor for nearly 4 years, and it has been a very rewarding experience.

    I feel that the link between the church and the school is very important, and I am committed to building on that link so that St Mary’s Church can support the school in practical ways and in prayer. In my spare time, I enjoy walking, visiting National Trust places, meeting friends and watching films.
