School Council
Our School Council is a group of pupils who meet regularly to discuss how they can make a difference to Heathlands school life. The School Council is a big commitment: class representatives are the voice between their class and the wider school community. Pupils express their concerns and suggestions on how school is managed, particularly how to create a happy, safe environment for pupils to learn and exceed. They have a sense of ownership over school decisions, policies and practices. However, it is not just our school community that pupils work on - local and national projects are of equal importance. For example: supporting charities such as Colchester Foodbank during Harvest time; hosting the annual Pudsey Ramble for Children In Need; tackling loneliness with a local councilllor; designing Speed Awareness posters as well as campaigning for more drinking fountains in the playgrounds and a greater variety of school meals.
Our School Council representatives are elected by the pupils at Heathlands annually and consist of one pupil from each class starting in Year 1 all the up to Year 6.
These are some things which our school council have done this academic year:
- Met with representatives from the parish council and Essex County Council to learn about their roles and democracy in the local community
- Planned and took part in an Anti-Bullying march to raise awareness of bullying in the local community
- Trees for Free scheme - voted to plant two new field maple trees on our school field
- Litter picking competition - a House Competition being run in the Spring term to help respect our school environment
