Visible Learning

At Heathlands Primary School our staff have been part of a three-year training programme which has transformed our focus to ensure pupils are at the very centre of all we do. Visible Learning means an enhanced role for teachers as they become evaluators of their own teaching.

According to John Hattie, Visible Learning and Teaching occurs when teachers see learning through the eyes of students and help them become their own teachers. Visible learning is driven by research and recognises key features that accelerate pupil progress. Pupils are fully aware, from Early Years to Year 6, what they are working towards and have a clear view of the “bigger picture”.

They are aware of, and strive to be rewarded for demonstrating the aspects of, what makes a good learner. In lessons, pupils are confident in selecting their own level of challenge and fully understand that failure is the first step to success. Our pupils realise the importance of responding to feedback in order to improve their work and make progress in their learning and now lead the parent, teacher, pupil consultation meetings.
